Historical Context
Zacapa Centenario 23 Años is one of Guatemala’s most iconic spirits and played a significant role in establishing premium aged rum on the international stage during the late twentieth century.
This particular example belongs to an early “Limited Production” release and represents one of the oldest Zacapa presentations encountered by collectors today. The traditional 75 cl format, the early label design and the distinctive handwoven Royal Palm covering suggest a commercialisation period between the late 1980s and the mid-1990s.
Produced and bottled by Licorera Zacapaneca S.A., these early bottlings were crafted from sugar cane honey and matured in the cool highlands of Guatemala, where significant temperature variations contributed to the development of their distinctive character and complexity.
The handcrafted Royal Palm covering became one of Zacapa’s most recognisable features and remains a symbol of the brand’s connection to traditional Guatemalan craftsmanship.
Today, these early 75 cl “Limited Production” bottlings are increasingly sought after by collectors as important witnesses to the origins and evolution of the Zacapa Centenario range.
