Historical & Distribution Context
Calisay is one of the most iconic Catalan liqueurs of the twentieth century. Its origins date back to the late nineteenth century, when the formula was developed by the Mollfulleda family in Arenys de Mar, on the Mediterranean coast north of Barcelona.
Produced from a secret blend of herbs, roots and spices, Calisay quickly became one of Spain’s most recognised liqueur brands. Throughout the twentieth century it was widely distributed across Spain and became particularly associated with Catalonia, where it achieved near-cult status among several generations of consumers.
For decades, production remained in the historic distillery of Arenys de Mar under the management of the Mollfulleda family. In 1981 the company was sold to the Rumasa holding group, marking the end of more than a century of family ownership. Following the expropriation of Rumasa in 1983, the brand was acquired by entrepreneur Pedro Rovira, who maintained production in Arenys de Mar for a number of years.
In 1994 production was officially transferred to Móra la Nova (Tarragona), and all remaining manufacturing activity in Arenys de Mar ceased in January 1995. As a result, bottles produced before the transfer are particularly appreciated by collectors, especially those originating from the historic Arenys de Mar distillery.
Today, vintage Calisay bottlings represent an important chapter in the history of Spanish liqueurs and are increasingly sought after by collectors of Iberian spirits and advertising memorabilia.
