History & Distribution Context

Lagavulin Distillery was founded in 1816 on the south coast of Islay and is widely regarded as one of Scotland’s most iconic whisky producers.

Released in 2016 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the distillery, this Lagavulin 12 Years Old forms part of Diageo’s acclaimed Special Releases collection. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 57.7% ABV, it reflects the distillery’s traditional style, showcasing intense peat smoke, maritime character and remarkable complexity.

Unlike the standard Lagavulin 16 Years Old, the annual 12 Years Old Special Releases are produced in limited quantities and bottled at higher strength, making them particularly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors.

Today, the 2016 Bicentenary Release is considered one of the most significant modern Lagavulin bottlings, celebrating two centuries of whisky-making excellence on Islay.
