Historical & Distribution Context
Created in 1840, the “Liqueur de Santé” was the first liqueur produced using the original recipe of the Elixir Végétal de la Grande Chartreuse. Its immediate success led Father Garnier, the lawyer and director of the liqueur business at the time, to officially rename it Chartreuse Verte and register the “Chartreuse” trademark in 1852.
Following the closure of the Tarragona distillery in 1989—formerly supplying primarily Spain and South America—all Chartreuse products commercialized in Spain were sourced from the Voiron distillery in France.
Importation and distribution continued to be managed by the Carthusian monks through their Barcelona-based companies, first Chartreuse Diffusion, S.L., and later Banyuls Difusión, S.L.
In 2017, a new phase began with the appointment of On Trade Cocktail Group, S.L. as the official importer for Spain, a role it continues to hold today.
The year 2020 corresponds to the last commercial release of Chartreuse Jaune produced in Voiron. From 2021 onwards, production was transferred to the Aiguenoire site, located in Entre-Deux-Guiers.
