Historical
Founded in 1923, the Yamazaki Distillery was established by Shinjiro Torii as Japan’s first commercial whisky distillery. Located between Kyoto and Osaka, the site was selected for its exceptional water sources and ideal maturation conditions.
Yamazaki became the foundation of Japanese whisky-making and remains the flagship single malt distillery of Suntory. Combining traditional craftsmanship with meticulous attention to detail, it has earned worldwide recognition and numerous international awards.
Introduced in 1984, Yamazaki 12 Years Old was Japan’s first widely distributed age-statement single malt and played a major role in establishing the reputation of Japanese whisky on the global stage. Today it remains one of the most iconic and sought-after expressions from the distillery.
